What are the advantages of using UV Units?
Ultraviolet (UV) light has many different applications including being a very effective disinfection treatment for all types of surfaces. UV units can be used to keep pools, surfaces, medical equipment, and water free from bacteria.
Its first use as a form of disinfection can be dated back to 1877. Since then, there has been plenty of research and development into creating an effective and safe way to utilise the bacteria fighting abilities of UV light.
Due to the safe nature of UV water treatment, UV units can be installed in domestic dwellings that aren’t on the mains water supply to quickly and effectively disinfect the water supply to the home.
Like any process, there are advantages and disadvantages to using it.
Let’s start with the advantages of using a UV unit:
- Eliminates 99.9% of all bacteria (this is an industry standard)
- Safe to use as UV units do not use any dangerous chemicals
- Kills bacteria without affecting taste, smell, or composition of water
- Eco-friendly, because the process doesn’t use any harsh chemicals there is no damage to the surrounding environment
- Low energy consumption
- Cost-effective and inexpensive
- Quick process to kill bacteria
The advantages outweigh the disadvantages of using UV to disinfect water, but there are some unavoidable ones:
- Sadly even with consistent research and development UV treatment is not suitable for large open bodies of water. UV light rays need to penetrate the water and when dealing with a large expanse this is extremely difficult to do as the rays will have a limited ‘effective’ reach
- UV treatment is only effective in clear water; therefore you may need an additional filter if the water supply is turbid or discoloured in anyway
- Although it eliminates 99.9% of all bacteria it doesn’t remove dissolved impurities in water such as arsenic and pesticides
- UV units require electricity to work but we can supply 12v versions for those wish to go ‘offgrid’

UV Units
A UV (ultraviolet) unit is commonly used in water treatment systems for domestic homes to disinfect and purify water. The UV unit serves as an effective way to kill or inactivate harmful microorganisms, including bacteria, viruses, and parasites, without the use of chemicals like chlorine.
UV Units are designed to provide low-cost, chemical-free disinfection solutions. See our available range below.
