What’s the difference between UV LED and traditional UV lamp systems?
UV LED systems offer several significant advantages over conventional UV lamps:
▪️Mercury-Free Technology:
UV LEDs contain no toxic mercury, eliminating environmental contamination risks during operation and disposal
▪️Instant Activation:
LEDs reach full germicidal power immediately, whereas traditional lamps require 3-5 minutes warm-up time
▪️Lower Energy Consumption:
Operating at 50W with intelligent standby mode, UV LEDs consume significantly less power than continuously-operating traditional UV lamps
▪️Extended Lifespan:
5,000 hours operational life provides longer service intervals compared to conventional 9,000-12,000 hour lamp life
▪️No Heat Generation:
UV LEDs don’t increase water temperature, whilst traditional lamps can add several degrees
▪️Durable Construction:
Solid-state design eliminates fragile glass tubes vulnerable to breakage or pressure damage
How do I know when the UV LED needs replacing?
The unit features an integrated visual status indication system:
▪️Blue Light: Standby mode – unit powered but no water flowing
▪️Green Light: Normal operation – UV LEDs active and water being treated
▪️Red Light: End of service life – LED module requires replacement
When the status indicator shows red, the LED module should be replaced to maintain optimal disinfection performance. Based on typical domestic or commercial use patterns, this usually occurs after 12-24 months depending on daily water consumption. We recommend keeping a spare LED module on hand to minimise any interruption to treated water supply.
Does this unit work with both filtered and reverse osmosis water?
Yes, our UV LED water sterilisers are designed to treat both filtered and reverse osmosis water, though maximum flow rates differ:
▪️Filtered Water (10 micron or finer): Maximum flow rate 37 L/min
▪️Reverse Osmosis Water: Maximum flow rate 50 L/min
The higher flow rate allowable for RO water reflects its superior clarity and UV transmittance compared to filtered water. Regardless of source water type, pre-filtration to at least 10 microns is essential for effective UV disinfection, as suspended particles can shield microorganisms from UV-C exposure. The unit will not function effectively with unfiltered water or water containing visible turbidity.
What flow rate does the unit need to activate, and what’s the maximum it can handle?
Minimum Activation Flow: 7 L/min
The integrated flow switch requires at least 7 litres per minute flowing through the unit to activate the UV LEDs. Below this threshold, the unit remains in standby mode to conserve energy and extend LED lifespan.
Maximum Flow Rates:
37 L/min (2,220 L/hour) for filtered water
50 L/min (3,000 L/hour) for reverse osmosis water
These maximum flow rates ensure sufficient contact time between the UV-C radiation and microorganisms to achieve ≥99.9% disinfection efficacy. Exceeding these flow rates reduces contact time and may compromise treatment effectiveness. For applications requiring higher flow rates, consider installing multiple units in parallel or specifying a higher-capacity model.
Can I install this unit myself, or does it require a professional installer?
Installation complexity depends on your existing plumbing configuration and technical competence:
Suitable for Competent DIY Installation if:
▪️You have basic plumbing skills and appropriate tools
▪️Your installation involves straightforward connections to existing 1″ pipework
▪️You’re comfortable working with threaded pipe connections
▪️Mains electrical supply is readily accessible
Professional Installation Recommended if:
▪️Significant modifications to existing plumbing are required
▪️You’re integrating the unit with commercial equipment or complex water systems
▪️Installation involves hard-wired electrical connections
▪️You’re uncertain about pressure ratings or flow requirements
▪️Local regulations require licensed plumber certification
Key Requirements:
▪️Unit must be installed as the final treatment stage before point of use
▪️Pre-filtration to 10 microns or finer must be in place
▪️Isolation valves should be fitted before and after the unit
▪️Electrical connection must comply with local wiring regulations
▪️System pressure must not exceed 20 bar
When in doubt, consult a licensed plumber or water treatment specialist to ensure compliant installation and optimal performance. Incorrect installation may compromise disinfection effectiveness or void warranty coverage.
